Happy Vernal Equinox 2012!

"We have to keep investing in the technology and manufacturing that helps us lead the world, but we’ve also got to protect the places that help define who we are, that help shape our character and our soul as a nation."

Where Have All The Ideals Gone?

Johnny Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer as Texas Ranger John Francis Reid in Disney's new interpretation of the classic "The Lone Ranger" - we need them now more than ever!

The Lone Ranger's Creed:

I believe...
  • that to have a friend, a man or woman must be one.
  • that all men and women are created equal and that everyone has within themselves the power to make this a better world.
  • that God put the firewood there, but that every man and woman must gather and light it themselves.
  • in being prepared physically, mentally, and morally to fight when necessary for that which is right.
  • that a man or woman should make the most of what equipment they have.
  • that 'this government of the people, by the people, and for the people' shall live always.
  • that men and women should live by the rule of what is best for the greatest number.
  • that sooner or later...somewhere...somehow...we must settle with the world and make payment for what we have taken.
  • that all things change but truth, and that truth alone, lives on forever.
  • in my Creator, my country, my fellow man and woman.

Wolf "Management"

Radio-collared wolf at Camp Ripley, MN   (Photo: U.S. Army Environmental Command)

Shooting or hunting a wolf with a radio collar seems an unfair advantage but is perfectly legal - and with the new state wolf "management" plans falling into place like dominos, shouldn't a provision be added to the laws that says killing a collared wolf is prohibited?   Not only does it intefere with biologist data, it makes wolves an easy target, as they are easily seen with the naked eye in addition to the signals being honed in on by unscrupulous hunters and by aircraft.

Recently just across the border from Oregon into Idaho, a "hunter"with an expired hunting license shot a collared wolf, known as OR-9 (yes, that's the brother of OR-7 from his Oregon pack).   He only received a slap on the wrist, and no doubt a high-five as well from the Fish & Wildlife department.  :(

Will Putting "Smart Collars" on Wildlife Reduce Human-Animal Conflict?
